For all Psion 5 owners who did not have the "luck" to see a broken
hinge in real life, here are the pictures of mine :
Snip from my correspondence:
#it was working fine until yesterday, and now this has occurred.
yes, first cracks came suddenly, then getting worse
you are lucky if you can still close your S5
BUT BEWARE - it gets EVEN WORSE ! -
if the little hollow metal pin (it is only 4 mm long),
which holds the tension spring (best seen if unit is half-opened),
jumps, falls or even breaks out(like mine), then the S5 is lost.
you cannot replace it inside again, so the unit has to be open all the
time-- not portable any more.
#What, if anything, did you do about the S5? Did the retailer take it
#back and replace it, or are you stuck with it?
My mailorder retailer sent me a new unit after i complained
(slightly), so i had 2 S5 for a few days enabling me to test the
infrared functions etc. All I had to pay was posting my old unit back
to them (about 10 DM = 6 USD = 3 UKP).
Try changing your S5, it is a common problem,
good luck , TOM
p.s. after 4 months my second S5 starts developing cracks at the
hinges above the ESC and DEL keys - all this is due to
TOO MUCH TENSION WHILE OPENING AND CLOSING THIS SHELL
- it is a Design fault !!!
so mayby i have go the same way again :-)
